Hridaya Silent Meditation Retreats in Romania
Enter Silence. Return to the Heart.
For a few days, the ordinary rhythm of life is set aside. Conversation becomes quiet, external input is reduced, and attention is invited to turn toward something more intimate than thoughts, roles, and personal history: the simple presence of being.
Hridaya Silent Meditation Retreats bring together meditation, Self-Inquiry, Hridaya Hatha Yoga, contemplative teachings, and mauna — noble silence. The retreat is not an escape from life, but a temporary simplification of life, allowing us to see more clearly what remains when habitual distractions soften.
Silence is not an absence of experience. It is the space in which experience can be seen with less interference.
Two ways to enter the retreat
The 10-Day Retreat — the heart of the journey
The 10-Day Hridaya Silent Meditation Retreat is the foundational retreat from which the shorter formats developed. Ten days create a different relationship with time: the first days allow the body and mind to settle; habitual patterns become more visible; and gradually Silence may become less something we impose and more a natural background of experience.
The retreat is open to complete beginners as well as experienced practitioners. The daily program grows gradually and includes guided meditation, Hridaya Hatha Yoga, spiritual teachings, written questions and answers, and extended periods of inwardness.
The 3-Day Retreat — a first taste of Silence
Three days can be enough for the outer rhythm to begin to soften and for meditation to become more than a technique. The 3-Day Retreat introduces the essential foundations of Hridaya practice in a gradual and accessible way.
In Romania, an English 3-Day Retreat may be offered as the opening three days of a concurrent 10-Day Retreat with Sahajananda. The event details always indicate the exact format. When a 10-Day Retreat continues, it may be possible to extend your stay, subject to prior confirmation and accommodation availability.
What makes a Hridaya Retreat different?
- Meditation centered on the Spiritual Heart
- not only mental concentration, but an opening toward the quiet background of Awareness.
- Self-Inquiry
- allowing the question “Who am I?” to turn attention from objects of experience toward the one who is aware.
- The Heart Center
- a contemplative support that helps gather attention and awaken intimacy with the inner center of being.
- Awareness of the pauses after inhalation and exhalation
- brief openings in which the usual momentum of thought can naturally soften.
- The Witnessing Attitude
- learning to observe thoughts, emotions, sensations, and energies without immediately identifying with them.
- Hridaya Hatha Yoga
- practiced meditatively, as a support for stillness, sensitivity, and interiorization.
- Mauna — noble silence
- which protects the inner process and allows subtle movements of the mind and Heart to become more visible.
Beyond mindfulness
Hridaya Meditation includes mindful attention, but it does not stop at observing experience. Again and again, the practice invites a more radical question: Who is aware of this breath, this thought, this emotion, this moment?
Instead of trying to perfect a particular state, we learn to rest more deeply in the Awareness in which all states appear. This is why the retreat draws inspiration from Advaita Vedanta, Ramana Maharshi, Kashmir Shaivism, Christian mysticism, Sufism, and other contemplative traditions, while remaining centered on direct experience rather than belief.
A place shaped for retreat
The retreats take place at Kamala Center in Sânpetru, a quiet village just outside Brașov, near the Carpathian Mountains and the Dealul Lempeș Nature Reserve. The center has been dedicated to spiritual practice for decades and offers simple accommodation, vegetarian meals, practice spaces, and a natural setting that supports inwardness.

Who are the retreats for?
You do not need previous meditation experience. The retreats are designed so that a complete beginner can enter the practice gradually, while experienced meditators can use the same structure to deepen Self-Inquiry, stillness, and the recognition of the Spiritual Heart.
A retreat is intensive, however. It includes many hours of practice, sustained silence, reduced external stimulation, and a disciplined daily rhythm. If you are going through an acute period of psychological instability, have a significant medical condition, or are following a treatment that may be affected by the retreat schedule, please write to us before registering and follow the guidance of the professional who supports your care.
The teaching lineage of the retreat
The Hridaya Silent Meditation Retreat was created by Sahajananda, founder of Hridaya Yoga. In Romania, English retreats may be led by Sahajananda or by experienced Hridaya teachers. The teacher is always named with the dates of each retreat.
The form of the retreat is comprehensive, but its essence is simple: to return, again and again, from what changes to the Awareness in which change is known.
Questions people ask
I have never meditated before. Can I join?
Yes. The retreat begins gradually, with meditation divided into shorter segments and clear practical guidance. Many participants attend their first retreat without previous meditation experience.
Why is the retreat held in silence?
Silence reduces the habitual exchange of impressions and helps attention remain inward. It also reveals how much inner movement continues even when outer conversation stops. Mauna is therefore not a punishment or social rule; it is a support for intimacy with the practice.
Is this a religious retreat?
No religious affiliation is required. Hridaya draws inspiration from several contemplative traditions, but the retreat emphasizes direct practice and the recognition of the Spiritual Heart.
Do I need to stay at Kamala Center?
Staying close to the retreat environment is strongly recommended, because the schedule begins early, ends late, and the atmosphere of silence is part of the practice. Accommodation options and what is currently available are confirmed when you register.
Where can I see prices and exact dates?
The dates are shown above and on the Dates in English page. Press “Book your place” next to a date: the booking page shows the participation fee, the rooms and the meals with their prices, before you register. For anything else, write to us at info@hridaya-yoga.ro.
Listen for the call of Silence
Whether you come for three days or for ten, the invitation is the same: to set the outer rhythm aside for a while, and to listen to what is already here.
